Believers
in Jesus Christ have held differing opinions as to the timing of the Rapture
since John Nelson Darby popularized the Pre-Tribulation Rapture doctrine in
the 19th century. None of the early Church fathers taught the
Pre-Tribulation Rapture doctrine contrary to what Hal Lindsey and the late
Grant Jeffrey claim. They all taught the Church would go into the Tribulation
and be persecuted by the Antichrist. The Reformationists wrote
very little about the Rapture and none of them were Pre-Tribulationists.
Post-Reformationists Increase Mather (1639-1723)
and his son, Cotton (1663-1728), wrote about the Rapture as well as Morgan
Edwards (1722-1795). The Mathers taught a
Post-Tribulation Rapture while Edwards taught a Mid-Tribulation Rapture. It was not until 1827 that the Pre-Tribulation Rapture position was revealed to the Church. Darby began teaching it in that year and it was quickly adopted by most of the Plymouth Brethren in England. It was spread to America with the work of Cyrus Ingersol Scofield. His 1909 Scofield Study Bible helped to popularize it even more. Today the majority of believers and Christians in America believe in the Pre-Tribulation Rapture. In
